The neural tube is a fold of embryonic tissue whose edges meet and close during the fourth week of pregnancy, forming a precursor to the fetal brain and spinal cord. The correct development of this structure is crucial for the complete formation of the fetus’ nervous system. When the upper or lower extremities of the neural tube don´t close, malformations of the brain and spinal cord will occur.
A reduced folate level in pregnant women is a risk factor for the development of fetal neural tube malformations. The use of Folic Acid supplements increases folate levels in pregnant women. In women of fertile age, this beneficial effect is obtained through daily ingestion of a 400 μg Folic Acid supplement for at least 1 month before, and 3 months after conception. IOB9® is a food supplement formulated with Iodine and Folic Acid.
